Mixed Response to Lower Crime Rate Data in Subways

Some commuters said they felt safer while others said they still witnessed crime.

Operation Fare Play was created to bring hundreds of officers into the city’s subway system – and the New York Police Department says it’s working. According to the NYPD, the campaign, which was launched a few weeks ago, sent 800 officers to join others underground in strategic locations that were decided based on crime rates, community complaints, and MTA statistics. Police said there’s been an almost 80% jump in fare evasion arrests, and that between April 8 and April 12, there have been 175 fare arrests and 724 summonses issued.
