Hoolie Gang Members Convicted in Tragic Shooting Death of Toddler in Bed-Stuy

Austin was convicted of three counts of second-degree attempted murder and Artis was convicted of three counts of first-degree attempted assault.

Two Hoolie gang members have been convicted in connection with the death of 22-month-old Davell Gardner Jr., who was fatally shot during a 2020 cookout in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez announced Tuesday. Dashawn Austin, of Canarsie, was convicted of second-degree murder and Akeem Artis, of Bed-Stuy, was convicted of first-degree manslaughter for the July 12, 2020 shooting that left Gardner fatally wounded. According to the District Attorney’s office, Austin was seen entering the passenger seat of an Audi driven by Artis that turned on to Madison Street, near a park where the cookout was being hosted.
