Former non-profit executive Dianne Morales officially kicked off her campaign for mayor Thursday night, seeking to become the city's first Afro-Latina mayor and pushing a progressive platform against a field of better-known politicians.
"We've had 109 mayors in New York. One was Black. None were women. None were Latino. None were indigenous. None were Asian," Morales, who is running for office for the first time, said at a virtual campaign launch event. "I know I'm not a traditional candidate. I'm not a traditional candidate because I've not spent a lifetime jockeying for the job."
