The incident — the second police-involved shooting in two days in the borough — unfolded just after 6 p.m. when police got multiple 911 calls about a man with a machete near Strauss Street and Dumont Avenue in Brownsville, Chief of Patrol Juanita Holmes said at a press conference.

"He was acting erratic, laying on the ground, damaging parked vehicles, attempting to enter one caller's front yard and chasing people in the area with the machete," Holmes said.

The man was pronounced dead after he charged officers and was shot once in the chest, police said.
