Major Fire Destroys 3 Factories in Sunset Park

A five-alarm fire starting at a factory in Sunset Park destroys three industrial buildings.

A five-alarm fire on the Sunset Park waterfront destroyed three industrial buildings early Wednesday.

The fire at 17 53rd St. broke out just after midnight, according to Kevin Woods, chief of fire operations at the FDNY. Multiple types of fire trucks, including ladders and fire boats, were used to temper the flames. At one point, fire fighters were using 15,000 gallons of water a minute to put out the fire, Woods said.

The fire broke out in a factory, collapsing the roof, and spread to two other buildings, Woods said. Over 250 fire and EMS personnel were called in and all three buildings have extensive damage.

"We are going to have resources here for quite some time," he said.

Two firefighters sustained minor injuries, and there is danger of some of the walls collapsing so firefighters have not gone inside the buildings, Woods said.
