NYC Health + Hospitals has been awarded $10.7 million from the New York State Abortion Access Program to strengthen abortion care across its 11 hospitals over the next three years.
The funding will go toward hiring providers and patient navigators, purchasing equipment and supplies, expanding access to abortion doulas and providing financial support for patients.
In 2024, the health system provided more than 6,000 abortions. Services currently include both medication and procedural abortion at hospital-based clinics, as well as telehealth options through the Virtual ExpressCare platform.
“I am thrilled that Governor Hochul and other state-level leadership has chosen to continue to put resources toward this essential healthcare service,” said NYC Health + Hospitals System Director of Complex Family Planning Marisa Nadas, MD, MPH. “Abortion care is vital to New Yorkers having agency over their lives and reaching their full potential. When people have control over their futures, we all benefit.”
The telehealth program allows New Yorkers seeking abortion care to connect with licensed clinicians by phone or video for assessment, counseling and, if eligible, medication. Available daily from 9:00am to 9:00pm, the service is offered in over 200 languages and can be accessed at expresscare.nyc or by calling 1-718-360-8981.
