Kenny Leon has garnered numerous accolades for his Broadway hits including Fences, Holler If Ya' Hear Me and A Raisin in the Sun.
RestorationART welcomes Tony Award-winning Broadway and television director Kenny Leon for a powerful conversation and book signing at the Billie Holiday Theatre on Wednesday, June 13. Moderated by Dr. Indira Etwaroo, executive director of RestorationART and The Billie Holiday Theatre, Leon will speak about his book Take You Wherever You Go: A Memoir.
"Kenny Leon's personal story is inspiring," shared Denzel Washington who worked with Leon on A Raisin in the Sun. "His grandmother and mother told him he could do what he wanted in life as long as he put in the work and remained true to himself, and that's what he did."
That's what he did, and more. Leon first gained prominence in 1988, when he became one of the few African Americans to head a notable nonprofit theater company as the artistic director of the Alliance Theatre Company, which he left in 2000 to become the co-founder and artistic director of the Kenny Leon's True Colors Theatre Company.
Leon's impressive Broadway credits include A Raisin in the Sun for which he received the Tony Award for Best Direction of a Play and Best Revival of a Play; The Mountaintop starring Samuel L. Jackson and Angela Bassett; Stick Fly produced by Alicia Keys; August Wilson's Fences, which garnered ten Tony nominations and won three Tony Awards; Gem of the Ocean and Radio Golf, among others. His extensive television work includes Hairspray Live! and The Wiz Live! on NBC. Other directorial credits include Alicia Keys World Tour, Toni Morrison's opera Margaret Garner, the world premiere of Flashdance The Musical and the complete August Wilson Century Cycle at the Kennedy Center.
Leon currently holds the Denzel Washington Endowed Chair in Theatre at Fordham University and is a sought-after motivational speaker who has conducted acting and theatre workshops nationally and internationally.
With a plethora of experiences and a career spanning more than four decades, the conversation with Kenny Leon will certainly offer an inspiring evening at the Billie Holiday Theatre. For more information and tickets go here.
