Sweet Sundays has become a staple in the heart of Flatbush since its opening in May 2024.
Catering to a community rich in diverse cultures and ethnicities, the Caribbean-owned restaurant has remained true to its Haitian roots in Prospect-Lefferts Gardens. The owners, husband and wife Felix Cesar and Debbie Louis, couldn’t be happier with their decision to expand.
Located at 1034 Nostrand Ave., the location means a lot to the owners. Louis, especially, is no stranger to the PLG area, as she has worked as a chief of staff in the area, just a block from the space. She frequented the storefront which held the space before.
“Opening this location in PLG has been heartwarming. It’s really nice to see the community come together to support us," Louis said. “It feels great just to be back in the community and this neighborhood.”
With their first location already established in the Flatbush area, located at 2916 Beverly Rd., Louis and her husband thought it was the right time to expand and open up a second location. She wasn’t surprised by the outcome and how busy it is, thanks to their loyal customers.
“I wasn’t surprised that it was going to be busy, although I didn’t know the demographic of the community because it’s changed so much over the years,” she said.
The only thing that surprised Louis was that many of the customers who frequent the first location actually live near the second location. “This location makes it easier for them. They’re coming out of their homes, coming from work, or going to coworking spots in the area. It feels good and natural to see our regulars at this location.”
When you walk into this new location, the space is warm and welcoming, just like their first. However, the newest location has more space and now has more amenities for customers to enjoy. They recently received their liquor license and have more events for the community to attend.
One of their customers from the Beverly Rd. location created an event called "Miles Together," where dozens of women come to work out and focus on their mental health, according to Louis.
“Watching them come together, there’s a sense of sisterhood, peace, and calmness, and it’s cool that we can provide the space for them," Louis said.
Aside from the cool events, Sweet Sundays now has a brunch menu, in addition to their regular food and drink menu, that meets the needs of all customers, from gluten-free to vegan, set at a reasonable price point, which was also important for the co-owners.
"With residents in the PLG area being priced out because of rent, and us not knowing what kind of demographic we were going to be catering to, it was important for us to keep the price at a comfortable rate for people to be able to spend without it hurting their budgets,” she said.
Sweet Sundays is open Monday through Friday from 7:30am to 4:00 pm and Saturday and Sunday from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. They are expected to extend their hours this fall.
