In preparation of the upcoming NYC election 2017, radio personality Ann Tripp of the Steve Harvey Show will host a free brunch for women to address their concerns about their communities on Saturday, November 4. Tripp will be joined by NYC Public Advocate Letitia James and NY State Assemblywoman Tremaine Wright, Councilmember Laurie Cumbo and Councilmember-elect Alicka Samuel at Bedford Stuyvesant's Sugar Hill Restaurant.
The brunch aims to inform women of the community about the stakes of the upcoming elections including this year's ballot initiatives and how to run for office, among other related issues pertinent to the community. Attendees will be able to address questions with the event's keynote speakers NYC Public Advocate Letitia James and NY State Assemblywoman Tremaine Wright, who will be joined by Councilwoman Laurie Cumbo of the 35th District and Alicka Samuel, who won the council seat for the 41st District in the primaries last September.
Public Advocate James became the first woman of color to hold a citywide office in New York City in 2014; as the public advocate she is the city's second highest ranking elected official. In 2016, focusing on legislation to support equitable reforms for women in the workplace, including child care, paid family leave and fair compensation, James released an analysis of the gender wage gap in New York City's workforce. Assemblywoman Wright represents the 56th Assembly District of Brooklyn, including Bedford-Stuyvesant and Northern Crown Heights; she is a member of various caucuses including the Legislative Women's Caucus, and the Committee on Children and Families.
New York City's municipal elections for mayor, comptroller, public advocate and all 51 city council seats will be held on Tuesday, November 7.
