On Thursday, the senior citizens of McKinney Gardens, a nursing home and rehabilitation facility in East Flatbush, put on their most vibrant masks, crowns and costumes to celebrate their annual Labor Day Carnival.
"At McKinney, we embrace the culture change initiative where we try to bring programs and events the seniors used to be part of when they were in the community," said Assistant Director Angela Cooper. "The residents really look forward to this carnival presentation. With events like these, we give our residents the best experiences in their home away from home."
The seniors celebrated carnival in typical fashion with a parade of bands and a calypso rhythm section. The participating residents paraded in front of a panel of judges, who then determined a "Band of the Year," and crowned a "King and Queen" of the band. As every year, all costumes were handmade by residents and staff. The carnival is part of the facility's recreational therapy and patient engagement program, "and the staff really plays an integral part in this event," said Cooper.
Located at 594 Albany Avenue, the nursing home provides short-term rehabilitation and long-term nursing services, as well as specialized care for serious injuries. Their dedicated medical teams deliver 24-hour care to facilitate each patient's healing and recovery as quickly as possible.
McKinney is a member of NYC Health + Hospitals essential health care system and is located adjacent to the NYC Health + Hospitals/Kings County campus.
