New York City's first affordable LGBT-welcoming senior housing development is launching a lottery for 108 low-income apartments on Wednesday, May 29.

Developed by BFC Partners and operated by LGBT advocacy group SAGE, Ingersoll Senior Residences will be the nation's largest LGBT-friendly senior housing community. The newly-constructed 17-story building located at 112 Edwards Street will feature 40 studio units and 68 one-bedroom apartment for LGBT seniors age 62 or older.

Qualifying low-income seniors can expect to pay up to 30 percent of their annual income. While there is no minimum income requirement, there are maximum income caps for individuals and couples at $37,350 and $42,700 per year, respectively. Fifty-four of the units will be set aside for current NYCHA residents and those on the waitlist for NYCHA or Section 8 housing.

The application process for more than 100 units at the newly constructed LGBT-friendly Ingersoll Residences opens May 29.

The development will feature amenities such as laundry facilities, a lounge, outdoor terraces and an on-site residence manager. The complex also includes a new 7,600-square-foot senior center operated by SAGE. The facility will provide a range of supportive services and cultural programs designed to help residents achieve the highest possible level of health and well-being, SAGE stated.

While the new housing and SAGE Center will be open to all qualifying low-income seniors, BFC Partners and SAGE stated that the building is uniquely designed to meet the needs of older members of the LGBT community. Older LGBT people are statistically more likely to face housing discrimination and harassment, and are less likely to have children and other family members to help care for their needs.

The official online application process for Ingersoll Senior Residences will open on Wednesday, May 29, at 11:00am.  Applications will be reviewed on a first-come, first-serve basis. For more information regarding the application process, go here.

Ingersoll Residences is expected to open this fall.
