Brooklynites, show up and show off for Brooklyn Public Library (BPL)'s inaugural gala extravaganza, "The People's Ball" on Saturday, December 1.

BPL invites Brooklynites of all ages and backgrounds to express themselves in their most beautiful, courageous and spirited fashion and to flaunt their style on the red carpet set against the picturesque backdrop of the historic Central Library at Grand Army Plaza. In contrast to the ultra-exclusive fashion galas that dominate the society pages each fall and spring, BPL's ball is a free event to celebrate the daring and unique style of our great borough.

"Dressing up is not a privilege. In fact, cutting-edge, fabulous style has nothing to do with exclusive high-priced galas and corporate fashion events," said László Jakab Orsós, BPL's vice president of Arts and Culture. "It belongs to the streets and to the people for whom dressing up is an act of creativity and freedom."

The central library at Grand Army Plaza will be outfitted for the event with a catwalk, open for party-goers to dazzle in their most daring ensembles. BPL's professional photographer will capture and share images from the catwalk on @bpl_presents before guests usher into the library to dance the night away to music from local musicians and DJs.

"Brooklyn Public Library is devoted to breaking down barriers that keep New Yorkers from experiencing the cultural riches that our great city has to offer," said Orsós. "Our hope is that the People's Ball will be a reflection of how much imagination and ingenuity can be found around us and how much joy occurs by exercising our basic rights to be free."

The event is free, but RSVPs are encouraged.
