Harriet's Apothecary, a Crown Heights-based community of healers and herbalists of color, will facilitate free one-hour healing sessions centered on meditation and restorative yoga at BRIC's Gallery every Friday until August 3. The program is in conjunction with the BRIC exhibit Alchemy, which showcases the work of seven artists whose work reflects new ways of thinking about the ancient concept of alchemy — the transformation of matter.

Harriet's Apothecary is an intergenerational healing village led by a brilliant collective of black cis women, queer and trans healers, artists, health professionals, magicians, activists and ancestors. This healing village, named after abolitionist Harriet Tubman, was founded in 2014 by healer, educator and artist Adaku Utah. Harriet's Apothecary offers services through its community and promotes what Utah calls healing "justice work." These services range from essential oil therapy to arts-based herbalism to Reiki, where energy is channeled into a person through the act of touching.

"I think a lot of folks come [to the healing village] because they see reflections of themselves, not only in our healing team but also in the community that comes," Utah said in an interview with BK Reader. "I feel like there's always been a need to connect with something that really honors your body's resilience and folks are becoming more and more open to being more intimate with themselves and building better relationships with systems of care that don't cause further damage to their body."

Harriet's Apothecary will take residence at BRIC every Friday until August 3, from 1:00pm to 2:00pm. All sessions are free and offer self-reflective and self-compassionate practices including yoga, breath work and guided meditations, centering on topics such as self-care, exploration of emotions and mental and physical restoration For a complete schedule, go here.

Please RSVP as space in the Gallery at BRIC is limited to 50 people. After that, participants are welcome to sit on the Stoop and join in as they are able. Bringing your own mat for yoga activities is optional; you don't necessarily need one, but may bring one.
