The American Library Association is planning a new traveling exhibition focused on financial literacy for kids, and Brooklyn Public Library is inviting families on Saturday, January 12, to give their input on what the exhibit should entail.

The program titled "Thinking Money for Kids" aims to teach children ages 7 to 11 and their parents, caregivers and educators about financial literacy topics in a way that is not only understandable, but fun. Through a bustling community market-themed storyline, digital interactive content and hands-on activities, the exhibition explores topics like what money is, its function in society, money choices and values, such as fairness, responsibility and charitableness.

To ensure that the exhibit meets the needs and wants of the children, BPL is hosting two feedback sessions on Saturday during which educators will present models and play games with attending families who are then encouraged to share their feedback. And, all the hard work, good thoughts and participation will also be rewarded: Each family  — consisting of at least one parent/ guardian and a child — will receive a $50 gift card.

Session one is reserved for children ages 7-8, and will run from 10:00am -11:30am; the following second session, for children ages 9-11, will begin at 12:00pm.

Once finalized, Thinking Money for Kids will travel to 50 U.S. public libraries between 2019 and 2021, and will also be accompanied by a range of public programming.

The exhibit is part of ALA's Smart investing @your library partnership with the FINRA Foundation, a program that launched in 2007 to support libraries in their efforts to provide patrons with educational resources about personal finance and investing.
