Brooklyn ice cream company Van Leeuwen is opening a Prospect Heights location as one of six new stores in New York City this spring.
The company is set to move into a 1,000-square-feet space inside the recently completed 550 Vanderbilt a 17-story, 278-unit condo building.
Since its humble beginnings out of a truck in 2008, Van Leeuwen has grown into a mini ice cream empire with 15 stores and trucks in NYC and LA, and pints sold in grocery stores. The ice cream manufacturer initially set out to revive the classic American ice cream truck and the art of traditional ice cream making by serving up both vegan and dairy treats made with simple, natural ingredients.
"Van Leeuwen classic and vegan ice creams are made with just a handful of fresh ingredients," the company states on its website. "Each flavor is a celebration of some of the world's best artisan producers and farmers both local and from around the world."
The company has since gained great notoriety for its dairy creations, which go beyond classics like chocolate, vanilla and strawberry, as well as its eclectic assortment of vegan products that are based on cashew milk, coconut milk or extra virgin coconut oil, and feature flavors like salted caramel, dark chocolate and mint chocolate. Van Leeuwen also offers special ice cream creations such as Vegan Couch Potato (infused with CBD oil), Vegan Canadian Breakfast, Classic Peppermint Stick and Sicilian Almond & Pear Tart.
The new Prospect Heights store will be the fourth Brooklyn outpost after Greenpoint, Williamsburg and Boerum Hill; five more Van Leeuwen locations are slated to open this spring in the Greenwich Village, Hudson Yards, Murray Hill, Midtown and Upper Westside neighborhoods.
