Governor Kathy Hochul has introduced a new online resource to help New York business owners manage the financial strain caused by tariffs imposed during the Trump administration.

The guide offers updated information on state programs and support for business owners facing increased import costs. It is designed to help small and mid-sized businesses navigate ongoing economic disruptions tied to federal tariff policies.

Alongside the launch, the state is conducting a survey that invites business owners to share how tariffs have affected their operations. The feedback will inform future support efforts and policy decisions.

Manufacturers and tourism-based businesses have reported significant losses. In northern New York, aluminum producer Alcoa absorbed an estimated $20 million impact due to Canadian import tariffs. Tourism businesses near the border are seeing a sharp decline in Canadian visitors.

Data shows that in May alone, 400,000 fewer Canadian tourists visited New York compared to the same month in 2024. Bridge crossings at Ogdensburg and Champlain were down 30% year over year. A survey by the North Country Chamber of Commerce found that 66% of tourism businesses reported a drop in Canadian customers, and one in four may reduce staff.

With Canada as New York’s top trading partner, the tariff dispute has had widespread consequences. The new resource guide aims to provide clarity, risk mitigation and access to state programs for business owners seeking relief.
