Open Squash, a New York City nonprofit focused on expanding access to the sport, on Tuesday said it has signed a long-term lease for a third location in Williamsburg.
The new facility, to be located at 55 Kent Ave. along the Williamsburg waterfront, will include four squash courts, a café, locker rooms and access to a gym and training area. The space will also feature a mezzanine level occupied by MOTIVNY, a physical therapy and personal training business expanding into Brooklyn for the first time.
“We could not be more excited to bring squash—and our mission of making the sport more affordable and accessible—to Williamsburg,” said David Ellen, founder of Open Squash. “To help make that happen, we will follow our same practice of providing membership discounts to low-income families and full scholarships to select low-income juniors.”
The Williamsburg site will introduce Open Squash’s full range of programming to the borough. Offerings are set to include clinics, camps, private lessons, round robins, leagues and a junior academy, all led by experienced coaches. The organization’s model emphasizes both high-level instruction and affordability, with discounted memberships for low-income families and full scholarships available for select junior participants.
MOTIVNY’s presence at the site is expected to complement the athletic programming. The company provides one-on-one physical therapy, personal training and sports performance assessments. A dedicated class studio will host daily group sessions focused on mobility, kettlebells and strength training. The expansion reflects the company’s existing ties to Brooklyn, where it has built a client base over several years.
The facility is being designed by Bricault Design, which previously led work on Open Squash’s existing locations. Squash courts will be constructed by Sunrise Courts, a U.S.-based company known for court development and a current partner of the organization.
“Brooklyn has been home to many of MOTIVNY's clients, community and staff for a number of years and we're excited to bring our coaching, education and events to an amazing growing community on the Williamsburg waterfront.” said MOTIVNY Founder Luke Greenberg.
Open Squash officials said the Williamsburg location aligns with the neighborhood’s growing interest in fitness and racquet sports. The organization currently serves more than 800 members across its Manhattan sites and sees Brooklyn as a natural next step in its expansion.
Construction is expected to take about one year. A founding membership pre-sale is planned to launch about six months before the facility opens.
