New York Modernizes MWBE Certification Process

New York launched the Empire State MWBE Hub on Thursday, a new mobile-friendly online platform designed to streamline the state's Minority- and Women-Owned Business Enterprise certification program and improve access to government contracting opportunities.

Announced by Governor Kathy Hochul, the platform modernizes key functions of the program, allowing businesses to apply for certification, manage applications, receive assistance and connect with state procurement opportunities through a single portal.

Developed by Empire State Development's Division of Minority and Women's Business Development, the cloud-based system replaces the certification application and business directory functions of the state's decade-old platform while leaving compliance-related functions on the existing system.

"Since taking office, my administration has made expanding economic opportunities for Minority- and Women-Owned Business Enterprises a central part of our work to build a stronger and more equitable New York," Hochul said in a statement. "We are continuing to break down barriers so more MWBEs can compete, grow, create jobs and contribute to communities across our state.”

Businesses can create secure accounts, submit certification and recertification applications electronically, communicate with certification staff, manage appeals and search a directory of certified firms. The platform also includes customer service tools, business development resources, event tracking and data analytics to improve program management.

The new hub could benefit Brooklyn's diverse community of minority- and women-owned businesses by making it easier to pursue certification and compete for state contracts. 

The platform also supports a broader effort to simplify certification across New York through collaboration with the New York City Department of Small Business Services, Monroe County and the Erie County and City of Buffalo Joint Certification Committee. In addition, its searchable directory is designed to make certified businesses more visible to state agencies and contractors seeking qualified partners for procurement opportunities.
