Crown Heights came alive on Sunday, July 20, as Island Pops celebrated its 10th anniversary. The celebration entailed a National Ice Cream Day event that brought together music, community and Caribbean pride.
The Caribbean-inspired dessert shop, located at 680 Nostrand Ave., marked a decade in business with steelpan performances, frozen treats and neighborhood love.
The event featured a collaboration with Brooklyn-born Trinidadian artist Taller Dan, who joined Island Pops to celebrate the release of his new single, “YOLO.” He performed alongside DJ Rashad, transforming the block into a high-energy street party that reflected the shared mission of both artist and business, a way of connecting with the community through culture.
Island Pops offered free popsicles during the celebration, sponsored by Seeds in the Middle, a local nonprofit focused on food justice and health equity. The giveaway aimed to promote healthy eating options and highlight the organization’s ongoing work in underserved neighborhoods.
Seeds in the Middle has long partnered with Island Pops through community-based events and farm stands. For Taller Dan, the event also served as a chance to give back and launch his new music in the heart of the neighborhood that raised him.
