Con Edison on Tuesday asked some of its Brooklyn customers to conserve energy while company crews repair equipment. The utility said it reduced voltage in parts of the borough by 8% to protect equipment and maintain service as crews make repairs.

The area is bounded on the north by Newtown Creek, on the south by Pacific Street and Fulton Street, on the east by Throop Avenue and Graham Avenue, and on the west by the East River. The area includes 133,000 customers in parts, or all, of these neighborhoods: Williamsburg, Greenpoint, Bedford Stuyvesant, Fort Greene and Clinton Hill.

The voltage reduction also affects parts of Park Slope, South Slope Windsor Terrace and Prospect Heights bounded by Pacific Street on the north, 20th and 23rd Street and Greenwood Cemetery on the south, Prospect Park on the east, and Fifth Avenue on the west.

As afternoon temperatures, soared, the utility also asked customers in East New York, Cypress Hills, Highland Park and City Line to conserve energy.

Con Edison is asking customers in these areas not to use energy-intensive appliances such as washers, dryers and microwaves until crews complete repairs. The company also asks customers to limit unnecessary use of air conditioning. If you have two air conditioners, use only one and set it to the highest comfortable temperature.

The equipment problems in these neighborhoods have no effect on the rest of the utility's system, the company said.

Customers can report outages and check service restoration status at www.conEd.com/reportoutage, or on the mobile app for iOS or Android devices, or by calling 1-800-75-CONED (1-800-752-6633). When calling, customers should report whether their neighbors also have lost power. Customers who report outages will receive updates with their estimated restoration times as they become available.
