Williamsburg's Sustainability-Themed Mini Golf Course Now Open for Summer

The summer-long miniature golf course teaches players about topics related to climate change.

This week marks the return of Putting Green, a one-of-a-kind 18-hole mini golf course that is open all summer long in Domino Park, along the Williamsburg waterfront.

Putting Green takes the fun recreational activity of miniature golf and combines it with an educational theme that teaches participants all about sustainability.

Each of the 18 holes featured on the pop-up course is designed by a member of the local community — ranging from artists, designers, school groups, environmental advocacy organizations, and public agencies.

Every individual hole focuses on a different theme related to climate change, including topics such as littering, rising sea levels, pollution, forest fires, composting and methane production, to name a few. The course is designed to "challenge and encourage players to learn more about the climate crisis," according to an email.

Keeping with its sustainability theme, many aspects of the course are made with refurbished or recyclable materials. Such environmentally-friendly materials that can be found throughout Putting Green include the course's turf, which was created with sustainably sourced and biobased materials; the curbing around the holes, which are made of 100% recycled tires; the entry globe, which is made from recycled plastic bottle caps and scraps of left-over turf; and more, according to the Putting Green website.

New additions to Putting Green this year include the course's first-ever Mini Golf League for competitive players, along with a selection of freshly pressed juices that local vendor Tom’s Juice will be selling to golfers.

Tickets cost $10 for adults and $5 for kids and seniors. A portion of the ticket sales will go towards supporting local conservation organizations, Newtown Creek Alliance and the Wildlife Conservation Society.
