University Settlement Broadens Support for Brooklyn Older Adults

Community care is reaching more older Brooklyn residents through an expanded program focused on connection, stability and creative engagement.

University Settlement has expanded its presence in Brooklyn over nearly two decades, growing from an after-school program in Boerum Hill to broader community services supporting older adults and caregivers.

The organization began expanding its programs into Brooklyn in 2006 with an after-school program at P.S. 133 in Boerum Hill.

The program established an early connection between University Settlement and Brooklyn families while creating a foundation for the organization’s continued work in the borough.

“For 140 years, we’ve gathered our neighbors around our shared dream of a New York where diverse communities are welcoming, affordable, and equitable,” said Steven Portericker, chief program and equity officer, University Settlement.

In 2025, University Settlement significantly expanded Wellness Together, a program serving homebound older adults and caregivers. The initiative began reaching more than 1,000 adults age 60 and older who are aging in place, providing stabilizing community care and opportunities for relationship-building.

The expansion is significant for Brooklyn communities as more older adults choose to remain in their homes while aging. Wellness Together provides support that extends beyond basic services, helping participants maintain connections and engage with others in their communities.

The program also incorporates creative activities, including an experimental theater workshop. The workshop provides an opportunity for older adults to participate in an arts-based activity while building relationships and strengthening community connections.

University Settlement’s work in Brooklyn has therefore grown considerably since its initial 2006 after-school program at P.S. 133. The organization’s expanded Wellness Together program now connects more than 1,000 adults age 60 and older with community care and relationship-building activities.

Future programming and participation opportunities will depend on University Settlement’s ongoing plans for the program.
