This weekend, head along to Bed-Stuyâs Restoration Plaza for the ultimate block party, RestorationROCKS!
Now in its 15th year, the party will celebrate the people, arts, culture and entertainment that make Bed-Stuy what it is.
This yearâs program, which kicks off at 12:00pm on Saturday, will feature some of New Yorkâs biggest master mixers on multiple stages on the Plaza including DJ Rich Medina, DJ Reborn, DJ Hard Hittin Harry, DJ Taela Naomi, DJ Sabine and DJ Stormin Norman. There will also be spoken word performances by acclaimed poets Derrick Cross, Clyla Destiny, Mic Murphy "The System" and David Mills.
The celebrations will run until 6:00pm.
Then on Sunday, the 39th annual 10km run or 5km walk & kiddie run will take place at the plaza at 10:00am.
Both activities are part of the week-long Bed-Stuy Alive! Celebration, which is about celebrating the local shops, businesses, traditions, cultural heritage and historical significance of one of the largest African-American communities in the country.
This yearâs theme, âLighting the Path for Our Children: Remember, Reimagine, Rebuild,â is an acknowledgment of those men and women who laid the groundwork and those who have continued to advocate for sustained growth, cohost The Billie Holiday Theater said in a statement.
The event is held in partnership between the theater and Bedford Stuyvesant Restoration Corporation.
Highlights of the festival are Saturdayâs block party that kicks off with the Opening Ceremony and Tohma Y. Faulkner Awards at 9:00am and will include a Childrenâs Village, Health Zone, Heritage Market and the Savor Bed-Stuy Food Court; the Brownstoners of Bedford Stuyvesant 43rd Annual House Tour and Scholarship Fundraiser, which will showcase a collection of the community's finest brownstones and limestones virtually from Oct. 16-31; and the fun run and walk.
In addition to promoting the importance of exercise and health, the race also gives an opportunity for residents and visitors to explore Bed-Stuy and win cash awards â" with $500, $250 and $150 being given to the top three participants in the 10km.
