The New York City Department of Transportation has announced that it will once again be bringing its annual Summer Streets program to Brooklyn this upcoming August.

Now in its 15th year, the program opens up select streets throughout NYC to give New Yorkers the opportunity to play, walk and bike without having to worry about the presence of automobiles.

Along with allowing New Yorkers to enjoy the streets freely, the NYC initiative also hosts a variety of free performances and offers numerous activities for attendees to participate in.

This year, Brooklyn will be hosting the program on Saturday, Aug. 26. The event will take place along Eastern Parkway, from Grand Army Plaza to Buffalo Avenue, connecting Prospect Heights and Brownsville on the same route as another popular Brooklyn event, the Caribbean Day Parade.

According to NYC DOT, this year’s Summer Streets will be the largest in the program’s history.

The program will be expanding into all five boroughs this summer, with Manhattan participating in Summer Streets for the first time ever.

Manhattan will open up its streets three Saturdays in a row, on Aug. 5th, 12th, and 19th, respectively. The Bronx will host Summer Streets on the same day as Brooklyn (Aug. 26), while the program will be commencing for the first time this summer in Queens and Staten Island on July 29.

“Summer Streets kicks off this weekend in Queens and Staten Island and will extend to all five boroughs for the first time,” said NYC DOT Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez. “The great programming and events enjoyed for years along Park Avenue will now be available along Grand Concourse, Vernon Boulevard, Eastern Parkway, and Richmond Terrace, making Summer Streets a true citywide experience. We thank our great sponsors and partners and hope every New Yorkers can make it out to enjoy this celebration of the season!”

The Summer Streets program is part of the New York City Mayor Eric Adams’ “Working People’s Agenda,” a $375 million investment that aims to create vibrant, accessible public spaces across the entire city.

Programming for each borough’s Summer Streets event will be updated regularly and can be found on the NYC DOT website.
