Raekwon Deepens Hip Hop Roots in Brooklyn

Raekwon The Chef, a Brownsville native, performed his landmark solo debut "Only Built 4 Cuban Linx…" on its 30th anniversary at BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! in Prospect Park.

Wu-Tang Clan member Raekwon The Chef on Saturday performed his landmark solo debut Only Built 4 Cuban Linx… on its 30th anniversary at BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! in Prospect Park. 

Thousands of fans gathered at the Lena Horne Bandshell to hear Raekwon rap his gritty, cinematic masterpiece that redefined East Coast Hip Hop and also laid the blueprint for mafioso rap.  

Known to fans as The Purple Tape, the provoking classic album presents brilliant storytelling and timeless bars.

The electric night was hosted by Lyricist Lounge, which was founded in the early 1990s by Anthony Marshall and Danny Castro. It started as an open mic event that showcased Hip Hop artists in a small apartment in Manhattan's Lower East Side. Later expanding to release compilation albums and a show on MTV, Lyricist Lounge continues to be highly respected in the world of Hip Hop, helping to launch many careers.

DJ Scram Jones kicked off the evening, followed by sets by Brooklyn Academy, Natural Elements, The Girllcodee and more.

Raekwon held court on stage, which also included some tracks from his latest body of work, Emperor’s New Clothes. Along with surprise guests Smif-N-Wessun and Busta Rhymes, it was a night curated by true hip heads for the culture.
