For writers and novelist, the process of creating content and stories can be one of the most rewarding yet solitary professional endeavors-- so much so, finding time for love can be a bit of a challenge for even the most passionate of scribes.
On Valentine's Day, Brooklyn Historical Society will host a series of brief readings and discussions on the topic of literary couples. Two favorite literary couples, Isaac Fitzgerald and Alice Sola Kim and Brendan Kiely and Jessie Chaffee, along with curator Penina Roth will join BHS's Franklin Park Reading Series for an eye-opening discussion on the tricky balance of writing and romance.
Isaac Fitzgerald is the co-author of Pen & Ink and Knives & Inkand the author of a YA novel and picture book forthcoming from Bloomsbury. He is the editor of BuzzFeed Books, and you can find him on Twitter at @IsaacFitzgerald.
Alice Sola Kim is a winner of the 2016 Whiting Award. Her writing has appeared or is forthcoming in places such as Tin House, The Village Voice, McSweeney's, Lenny, BuzzFeed Books, and The Year's Best Science Fiction and Fantasy. She has received grants and scholarships from the MacDowell Colony, Bread Loaf Writers' Conference, and the Elizabeth George Foundation.
Brendan Kiely is The New York Times bestselling author of All American Boys (with Jason Reynolds), The Last True Love Story, and The Gospel of Winter. His work has been published in ten languages, received a Coretta Scott King Author Honor Award, the Walter Dean Myers Award, the Amelia Elizabeth Walden Award, and was selected as one of the American Library Association's Top Ten Best Fiction for Young Adults. Originally from the Boston area, he now lives with his wife in Greenwich Village.
Jessie Chaffee's debut novel, Florence in Ecstasy, will be published by the Unnamed Press in May 2017. She was awarded a 2014-2015 Fulbright Grant in Creative Writing to go to Italy to complete the novel, during which time she was the Writer-in-Residence at Florence University of the Arts. Her fiction has been published in The Rumpus, Bluestem, Global City Review, Big Bridge, and The Sigh Press, among others.
