Author Joan Morgan will be joined by scholar Dr. Yaba Blay, activist Michaela Angela Davis and feminist writer Kierna May to celebrate her new book on Lauryn Hill's iconic album
Award-winning author Joan Morgan sits down with fellow hip-hop journalism pioneers for the release of her book She Begat This: 20 Years of the Miseducation of Lauryn Hill at the Brooklyn Museum on Thursday, August 9.
Two decades after the release Lauryn Hill's iconic debut album in 1998, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill continues to be a major influence on today's artists. She Begat This: 20 Years of the Miseducation of Lauryn Hill celebrates the album's anniversary by examining the Hill's musical and cultural legacy. Morgan delivers an in-depth analysis of the album and its enduring place in pop culture. She Begat This is both a portrait of a magical moment when a young and fierce singer-rapper-songwriter made music history and a work of scholarship for longtime hip-hop fans and a new generation of fans just discovering this album.
Morgan is known for her work in the field of "hip-hop feminism," a term she coined in her 1999 book When Chickenheads Come Home to Roost. She has appeared on MTV, BET, VH-1 and CNN to speak about the intersection of hip-hop and gender, and conducted a 12-city tour titled Does Hip-Hop Hate Women, which brought national attention to the growing misogyny, sexism and homophobia in hip-hop culture. Through her writing and appearances, Morgan has established herself as one of the most perceptive and engaging social commentators in America today.
The evening kicks off with a book-signing, a listening session of The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill and a collection of videos inspired by the album. Following the signing, Morgan is joined by image activist Michaela Angela Davis, feminist writer and editor Kierna Mayo, consultant and Native Son founder Emil Wilbekin, and scholar and film producer Dr. Yaba Blay for a conversation on the iconic album. Artist Alex Asher Daniel closes out the night with a DJ set honoring Lauryn Hill in the museum's first floor Rubin Pavilion.
