This month, FiveMyles gallery in Crown Heights is celebrating young artists by holding an exhibition dedicated to their work, curated by their peers.
The nonprofit gallery, founded in 1999, said in a statement the impetus for the exhibit (and a previous one in July) was to show the work the artists were making in their studios — which was creating a buzz with their peers -- and bring it to a wider audience.
"We know that most of this work stays in the studios, and we felt that these two exhibitions in a small way bring this art before the public," the gallery said. "It also interested us to see work that is thought of as contemporary and strong by this younger generation of artists."
For the August exhibition, Out of Sight, artist Dionis Ortiz invited other artists to participate, asking them to consider the theme of seen and unseen aspects of racism and to investigate how systematic structural patterns assign invisibility to a section of the population.
The featured artists will include Ortiz, Andy Van Dinh, Kathleen Granados and Peter Hoffmeister.
The show opens on Saturday, August 14 and is on view from 1:00pm to 6:00pm Thursday through Sunday, or by appointment, until the end of August.
FiveMyles programming often centers on place, personal vision, politics, identity and experimentation, the gallery said, and exhibitions are often inspired by art rooted in non-Western cultures and have included photography and video from East Africa and contemporary Native and Caribbean art.
