Coney Island USA is paying tribute to the late Paul Reubens and his unforgettable alter ego, Pee-wee Herman, with a birthday celebration and the very first Coney Island Pee-wee Herman Look-Alike Contest.
The event also marks the 40th anniversary of Pee-wee’s Big Adventure, the cult classic that cemented Pee-wee’s place in pop culture history.
The contest invites fans to get creative with costumes across several categories, from classic Pee-wee Herman to the colorful cast of Pee-wee’s Playhouse and characters from his films.
Expect everything from Miss Yvonne, Capt. Carl to Cowboy Curtis, Reba the Mail-lady, the King of Cartoons, Jambi or any of the colorful cast of characters from the classic TV show.
The event is co-hosted by Coney Island USA’s Artistic Director Adam Rinn and performer Little Brooklyn, both longtime admirers of Reubens’ work. The event promises the same kind of fun and spectacle that defines Coney Island traditions like the Mermaid Parade.
Prizes, entertainment and plenty of nostalgia are on the lineup.
Date: Sunday, August 24
Location: 1208 Surf Ave., Coney Island
Time: Registration starts at noon inside the break bar; contest begins at 1 pm on West 12th St.
Guests are also encouraged to check out the Coney Island Circus Sideshow and the Coney Island Museum, both housed in the organization’s landmarked building.
