A viral video has put Bed-Stuy’s Confessions Bar in the spotlight, drawing attention to its owner beyond her regular comedy nights, according Headtopics.

Debbie Shields, 68, gained widespread attention after an impromptu exchange with comedian Conan O’Brien aboard a New York City subway train appeared on Subway Takes, a social media series hosted by Kareem Rahma.

Shields was travelling with her friend Tony when she spotted O’Brien filming a segment after transferring from the A train to the F train. A longtime fan of the comedian, she decided to approach him and join the conversation.

The interaction quickly developed into a playful exchange about a fictional marriage and their imaginary children. When O’Brien joked about their family, Shields responded that one child was in medical school and the other was in jail. Her quick-witted replies prompted laughter from O’Brien and others nearby.

The 89-second conversation helped introduce Shields to a broader audience and brought renewed interest to Confessions Bar, her business in the Brooklyn neighborhood. The establishment hosts weekly comedy nights, where Shields regularly introduces performers.

The response to the video has also prompted Shields to consider pursuing stand-up comedy. Although she has experience speaking to audiences at her bar, she has not yet committed to performing comedy herself.

Shields has said she enjoys making people laugh and is open to exploring the opportunity. The attention has also inspired a new addition to the bar’s menu: a cocktail named the Baby Daddy O’Brien, a reference to the pair’s improvised family story.

Rahma has since visited Confessions Bar following the video’s success. O’Brien has reportedly discussed visiting the establishment for karaoke, although no appearance has been confirmed.

For Shields, the unexpected encounter has created an opportunity to build on the comedy events already taking place at her business. Whether she pursues stand-up or continues supporting performers at the bar, the viral exchange has brought new visibility to the establishment and its role in the neighborhood’s entertainment scene.
