Music at Co-Cath is ushering in the holiday season with Monteverdi Christmas, an immersive choral experience inspired by Monteverdi’s Vespers of 1610 and Selva morale e spirituale.
The program unfolds inside the Co-Cathedral of St. Joseph in Prospect Heights, using the cathedral’s soaring architecture to amplify the ensemble’s blend of theatrical staging and richly layered vocals.
“Monteverdi is the bridge between Renaissance and Baroque,” said Artistic Director Alejandro Zuleta. “His music is bursting with drama and color—perfect for a Christmas concert that feels both and deeply moving.”
The production reinterprets these centuries-old sacred works for a contemporary audience, drawing out their dramatic color and emotional weight. The result is a celebration that feels both rooted in tradition and strikingly present.
Following a sold-out fall debut, the holiday edition has quickly become one of the season’s most anticipated concerts. Performances remain free and open to all, but MACC is making a limited number of reserved seats available. Sixty seats per night can be secured with a $100 donation.
The concert continues MACC’s mission of bringing choral theater into new territory, inviting audiences into an experience that blurs the line between performance and place.
