A new public art exhibition is transforming Brooklyn Army Terminal into a large-scale cultural destination along the Sunset Park waterfront.
The free, yearlong exhibition, In Plain Sight, opened June 4 and features works by 12 Brooklyn-based artists installed throughout Brooklyn Army Terminal and the Brooklyn Wholesale Meat Market.
Organized by the New York City Economic Development Corporation, the site-specific exhibition explores the waterfront's history through sculpture, murals, photography and large-scale installations.
“In Plain Sight reflects NYCEDC’s commitment to activating our industrial campuses as places not only for economic opportunity, but for cultural engagement and community connection,” said Jeanny Pak, NYCEDC interim president and CEO.
The artworks examine themes including labor, industry, ecology, migration and community, drawing inspiration from the area's past and present. Several pieces were fabricated on-site using materials supplied by tenants and makers based at the campus.
Curated by Debra Simon in partnership with NYCEDC and WXY architecture + urban design, In Plain Sight features installations placed throughout indoor and outdoor spaces, including plazas, lobby areas, waterfront access points and decommissioned train cars.
Participating artists include Z Behl, Elana Herzog, Nathan Kensinger, DB Lampman, Hyesu Lee, LOT office for architecture, Avani Patel, Sheila Pepe, Yuya Saito, Jean Shin, Gabrielle Vitollo and Zhidong Zhang. Their works reflect the cultural diversity of Sunset Park, one of Brooklyn's most diverse neighborhoods.
All installations are free to view and accessible throughout the Brooklyn Army Terminal campus.
