The G train’s signal system dates back to the 1930s and is now being modernized with state-of-the-art Communications-based Train Control (CBTC), which will bring more reliable service to the 160,000 riders. Once the $368 million project is completed, the G will be the third line in the subway system to be fully converted to CBTC, following the L and the 7.
During this time, the MTA will also work on scraping, priming and painting platforms, tracks and mezzanine ceilings; replacing over 9,000 tiles; scraping, priming and painting station columns, installing LED lamps; and installing 5G cellular service.
