Weekend Fire Destroys Borough Park Building

Firefighters battled a three-alarm fire in Borough Park on Sunday, where flames eventually burned through a 3-story building and roof.

The FDNY responded to reports of fire and smoke at 5311 Fort Hamilton Pkwy at 1:45 p.m., officials said.

Units arrived in about four minutes and were met with heavy smoke coming from the doorways of the building. The fire eventually burned through the three-story building and through the roof. About 200 fire and EMS personnel responded to the scene.

"We had five handlines stretched and put into operation," said Assistant Chief Michael Meyers. "We had a tower ladder that was set up to help knock down the fire, as well. Firefighters worked valiantly and bravely containing the fire to the original fire building and not allowing it to extend to either attached exposure."

One firefighter was treated for minor injuries and there were no civilian injuries. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
