Construction at Atlantic Avenue and Boerum Place in Brooklyn is scheduled to begin in fall 2026, bringing temporary traffic changes and safety improvements to the busy intersection. The project will add a raised crosswalk, upgraded pedestrian ramps, new traffic signals and accessible pedestrian signals, according to Patch.com.
Restani Construction Corp. will carry out the work, which is expected to take about one month. Crews will generally work from 10:00am to 4:00pm, Monday through Friday. Weekend work may take place from 9:00am to 6:00pm, if needed.
Three traffic lanes will remain open on Atlantic Avenue during construction hours: one eastbound left-turn lane, one eastbound through lane and one westbound through lane. All travel lanes will be restored after working hours. Four New York City police traffic agents will help direct vehicles through the area.
The project aims to improve pedestrian safety and accessibility at the intersection. The raised crosswalk is designed to encourage drivers to slow down, while upgraded ramps and accessible signals will help people with disabilities cross the street.
Construction will temporarily affect pedestrians, cyclists and drivers. The crosswalk on Atlantic Avenue west of Boerum Place will close during working hours. On Boerum Place, cyclists traveling between Atlantic Avenue and Pacific Street will share a lane with southbound vehicles. Temporary no-parking restrictions also will apply on both sides of that stretch.
Access to nearby buildings and parking garages will remain available during construction.
The work also includes relocating a water-main valve and installing a new catch basin, chute connection and manhole. The project team has not confirmed whether water service interruptions will be necessary or provided dates for any shutdowns.
Crews must follow New York City's noise code and dust-control regulations. Design completion is expected in spring 2027. The exact construction start date has not been announced.
