New York City residents can expect a winter snow storm to blanket the boroughs on Sunday, with the National Weather Service warning 8 to 14 inches of accumulation.
A Code Blue Weather Emergency notice was also issued on Thursday night, a declaration when city officials think the temperature drops to 32 degrees Fahrenheit or less between 4:00pm and 8:00am, including National Weather Service calculations for wind chill values. The temperature in the city is predicted to range between 10 degrees to 19 degrees on Saturday.
"This weekend is going to be cold, it is going to be windy, and above all else, it is going to be a weekend where your city is prepared," New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said at a press conference on Friday, urging New Yorkers to stay home on Sunday.
The mayor said about 2,000 Sanitation Department employees will start 12-hour shifts on Saturday evening to prepare for the storm. DSNY will salt as soon as the first snowflakes hit the ground with 700 salt spreaders, he added.
Once the snow accumulates to 2 inches, 2,200 plows will activate across the city, likely on Sunday morning, Mamdani said.
Governor Kathy Hochul declared a State of Emergency for New York on Friday.
“Winter in New York is nothing we can’t handle, but it is important to take the risks that come with extreme cold seriously,” Hochul said in a statement. “New Yorkers should avoid travel during the snow, especially with the danger that comes with being stranded in these cold temperatures. If you must travel, be sure to leave yourself extra travel time and pack your car with supplies like blankets, water, and snacks. Safety is always the top priority, so make sure you are ready to face this storm.”
