At a celebration marking ten years of service in the New York State Legislature, State Senator Roxanne J. Persaud announced that she has secured more than $30 million in grants for organizations within or serving Brooklyn’s Senate District 19 since taking office in 2016.
The funding includes over $25 million in state-administered capital project grants and more than $5 million in operating grants for programs that strengthen education, health care, youth development, senior services, plus public safety across the district.
Of the $25 million in capital funding, $7.25 million supported upgrades to NYC public schools, covering everything from new auditoriums and ADA-compliant bathrooms to air conditioning and playground renovations.
“I’m proud to support local community-based organizations that lift up young people, protect our vulnerable neighbors and help all New Yorkers to thrive,” Persaud said in a statement.
Another $5 million was allocated toward public parks and playgrounds, $3.6 million to improve security at NYCHA and Mitchell-Lama residences, and nearly $2 million to enhance community health facilities.
Additional awards included $1.5 million for higher education institutions, $1.2 million for organizations serving people with disabilities, $755,000 for first response and public safety initiatives, plus $750,000 for Brooklyn Public Library branches.
More than $5 million in operating grants have been distributed to local organizations such as the Jewish Community Council of Canarsie, The Campaign Against Hunger, East Flatbush Village, Jamaica Bay–Rockaway Parks Conservancy and NYLAG, among others.
Persaud marked the milestone with a vibrant cultural celebration at the South Shore High School Campus on Sept. 28.
The event featured stilt walkers, praise dancers, step routines, traditional drumming, folk songs and powerful solo vocals, each showcasing the rich diversity and cultural pride of Senate District 19. Community members, elected officials, and local stakeholders came together to honor Persaud’s decade of service and enjoy a dynamic program filled with unity, tradition and celebration.
