House Republican Conference Chair Elise Stefanik wants New York Attorney General Letitia James disbarred for her "biased investigation and prosecution" of former US president Donald Trump.
According to NBC News, Stefanik filed a complaint against James in a letter to the New York Committee on Professional Standards. Stefanik further accuses James of attacking the former president through "extrajudicial statements" and "highly inappropriate and prejudicial comments on social media" and asked the committee to investigate James and disbar or suspend her.
Stefanik, a long-time ally of Trump, wrote in her statement that James, as the AG, must adhere to appropriate behavior and refrain from posting her opinions on matters of public interest.
"While all Americans possess the right to express their opinions on matters of public interest, attorneys — particularly state attorneys general — are held to a higher standard due to their unique role as officers of the court," she reportedly wrote in her statement.
Stefanik's complaint comes after James' call for a $370 million fine against the former president and his companies, and a lifetime ban on him and two former company executives from the New York real estate industry. Trump will hear a verdict on the matter this month.
