Rep. Nydia M. Velázquez (D-N.Y.) introduced a House resolution in support for the designation of April 13–26, as National Young Audiences Arts for Learning Week, a national observance celebrating the role of the arts in youth development and education.
The resolution highlights the contributions of Young Audiences Arts for Learning, a national network of arts-in-education organizations, and underscores the importance of promoting arts education and recognizing its role in youth development, according to a press release.
“During National Young Audiences Arts of Learning Week, we recognize the incredible power and inspirations that the arts’ has on our young people across the country,” said Velázquez. “Supporting the arts in student learning is crucial to the development of our youth and this week serves as a reminder that we must continue to advocate for more arts education in schools nationwide.”
National Young Audiences Arts for Learning Week was first championed in 1971 by renowned conductor Leonard Bernstein. The observance has since expanded into a two-week celebration of creativity in education, supported by the Young Audiences network, educators and community leaders.
David Dik, national executive director of Young Audiences Arts for Learning, thanked Velázquez for her continued support and noted the significance of this year’s observance.
"This is an important moment in Young Audiences’ history because not only are we celebrating our 73rd anniversary, but we continue to promote the role that creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurism plays through initiatives such as the National YA Week," he said.
