After the National Weather Service issued a Heat Advisory through 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 7, New York City Mayor Mamdani issued plans for the upcoming extreme weather according to a press release by the Office of the Mayor.
Heat index values are expected to reach around 100 degrees, accompanied by scattered thunderstorms. The highest risk of heavy rainfall is predicted to occur Friday afternoon and evening.
The Office of the Mayor advises that New Yorkers limit outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day, stay in air-conditioned spaces as much as possible and check on neighbors who may be vulnerable.
“If you don’t have air-conditioning, make a plan to spend time at a cooling center,” said Mayor Mamdani. For basement units, the Mayor suggests knowing where you’ll go if water begins to rise. “City government is mobilizing every resource we have – from catch basings and preparing emergency crews to sending COOL vans to check on older adults,” he said.
New Yorkers can find a list of hundreds of Cooling Centers across the five boroughs here, or by calling 311. Thousands of LinkNYC kiosks will also provide walking directions to the nearest cooling centers. 21 COOL vans will provide support services and transportation to cooling centers and facilities.
Downed trees, blocked catch basings and other nonemergency hazards should be reported to 311, while anyone in immediate danger of rising water should call 911.
