The New York City Department of Transportation on June 6 issued an advisory about fraudulent QR code stickers placed on city parking meters. These QR codes redirect users to third-party websites that request credit card information.
These QR codes are not authorized and should not be scanned, the DOT said.
“Consumers beware: scammers are targeting parking meters, and we want you to be vigilant. If you see a QR code on a parking meter, do not scan it and please report it,” said NYC DOT Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez. “This is a scam to collect your payment information, and we are working with law enforcement to hold those responsible accountable.”
The agency clarified that the only secure methods for paying for metered parking in New York City are through the official ParkNYC mobile app or by using a credit card at the meter itself. Any other method, including QR code links, is not approved.
In response to the scam, DOT has implemented several measures. Users of the ParkNYC app will receive an in-app notification warning them about the issue and reminding them of legitimate payment options. Law enforcement has been informed, and DOT has started inspecting meters citywide to remove unauthorized stickers or messaging.
DOT is encouraging the public to report any QR code stickers found on parking meters. Reports can be submitted by calling ParkNYC at 212-839-7100 or by emailing [email protected].
Individuals who believe they may have entered payment information on a fraudulent website are advised to contact their bank or credit card provider and notify law enforcement. They should also report the location of the meter to ParkNYC.
