Uber and Lyft drivers who were underpaid by the e-hailing companies have until the end of January to file their claim in order to receive monies owed to them after New York Attorney General Letitia James secured a $328 million in back payments.
An internal probe revealed that the companies withheld payments to several drivers and failed to provide other essential employee benefits. Drivers who believe were unpaid have until Jan. 31, 2025, at 11:59pm, to file their claims online, according to a press release.
The $328 million settlement includes $290 million from Uber and $38 million from Lyft. It also mandates workplace improvements, such as a minimum earnings floor, paid sick leave, and clear hiring and earnings notices.
Drivers who worked for Uber between 2014 and 2017 or Lyft between 2015 and 2017 may qualify for compensation. Those who think they are eligible, or who filed claims but received no response, are encouraged to submit or update claims via the settlement portals for Uber or Lyft.
“Rideshare drivers help keep New York moving and deserve full and fair compensation for their hard work,” said James. "My office will always fight to ensure workers in New York receive the treatment, benefits, and wages they are due.”
More than 100,000 drivers across New York are eligible for settlement funds, with over 88,000 claims already filed as of Dec. 18, 2024, the press release said.
