The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance announced that the 2025 income tax filing season began on Jan. 26, where both the state Tax Department and the Internal Revenue Service will begin accepting and processing income tax returns from New Yorkers.

Taxpayers should note that the deadline to file 2025 income tax returns and pay any taxes owed is midnight on Apr. 15, 2026. That date also applies to those who plan to request an extension of time to file. While an extension allows more time to submit paperwork, any taxes owed must still be paid by the April deadline to avoid penalties and interest.

State officials are once again encouraging eligible New Yorkers to take advantage of the Free File program, which allows residents to file both federal and New York State income tax returns at no cost. The service is available through the New York State Tax Department’s website and is designed for taxpayers who meet certain income and eligibility requirements.

“I encourage all eligible taxpayers to take advantage of Free File – a secure, efficient, and free way to file,” New York State Acting Commissioner Amanda Hiller. “To save on tax preparation costs, visit the New York State Tax Department website for a truly free filing experience for those who qualify.”

According to the Tax Department, users save an average of $269 in preparation fees by filing through the program. Free File offers a secure and efficient way to complete returns online, with guided software that helps taxpayers accurately report income, claim deductions and apply for eligible credits.

In addition, the Tax Department is urging residents to prepare early by gathering key documents such as W-2s, 1099s, and records of deductible expenses. Filing early and choosing direct deposit can help speed up refunds and reduce the risk of delays or fraud.
