Beginning later this month, the N and R lines will increase their midday service during the weekdays.

State Senator Andrew Gounardes and Councilman Justin Brannan announced the increase in the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) service today. Trains will now run every 8 minutes during the midday periods on weekdays, a service increase from the current every 10 minutes.

“Every New Yorker who lives on a N/R line knows how crucial these service upgrades will be,” said State Senator Andrew Gounardes. “I have been advocating for increased service on these lines for southern Brooklyn and beyond since far before I was elected to office, and have continued that fight up in Albany each year. I’m proud of the efforts my colleagues and I put in to expand service for straphangers, and proud of the crucial victories we secured in this year’s budget.”

Brooklyn has received significant improvements in subway service, including the announcements of updated schedules for the G, J, M, C, 1 and 6 trains. These improvements are a result of increased funding allocated to the MTA in this year’s New York State budget.

Senator Gounardes, Councilman Brannan and other community members have been advocating for more reliable and more frequent access to public transportation along the N and R lines. The N and R lines serve a number of stations that have seen ridership surpass pre-pandemic levels this year, including the 36th St and 59th St stations in Sunset Park and DeKalb Avenue in Downtown Brooklyn.

“It doesn’t get much more Bay Ridge than the R train, so increased service is great news and a big deal for our community,” said Councilman Justin Brannan. “Public transit literally keeps our city moving, and southern Brooklyn deserves faster and better connections to the whole network. Between this, our express buses, and expanded express NYC Ferry service, it’s never been a better time to be a Bay Ridge, Bensonhurst or Sunset Park resident on the go!"
