New York City Transit will change J and M subway service in Brooklyn from Oct. 13 through late November as crews replace track switches near the Marcy Avenue station in Williamsburg. The work will alter weekday J service and require weekend disruptions, including free shuttle buses between Brooklyn and Manhattan, according to Bushwick Daily.
The MTA said J trains will run locally between Marcy Avenue and Myrtle Avenue-Broadway from 10:00am to 3:00pm on weekdays during the affected period, with some exceptions.
On five weekends beginning Oct. 17, J trains will operate between Jamaica Center-Parsons/Archer and Myrtle Avenue-Broadway, while shuttle buses will replace service between Myrtle Avenue-Broadway and Delancey Street-Essex Street. M trains will operate in two sections, with trains arriving about every 20 minutes.
"These switches have reached the end of their useful life and replacement of these 29-year-old switches is crucial to the continued reliability of subway service along this corridor," said Megan Flynn, assistant director of government and community relations at New York City Transit in a notice to community partners.
The project will affect riders in Williamsburg, Bushwick, Bedford-Stuyvesant, East New York, Ozone Park and Jamaica. The equipment will allow trains to move between local and express tracks and is needed to maintain service along the corridor.
The construction will also bring cranes and temporary street restrictions to Williamsburg. Portions of Rodney Street and Keap Street may close during the work, while Broadway between Marcy Avenue and Keap Street will have parking restrictions during weekend construction.
The weekend work will skip Oct. 31-Nov. 1 for the New York City Marathon. Riders should check the MTA’s latest service alerts before traveling because published notices have contained different dates and times for some November work periods.
The agency expects the project to continue into late November, when regular J and M service should resume following completion of the switch replacement.
