A proposal to build two residential towers near Bushwick Inlet Park in Greenpoint is drawing mixed reactions from the community even before the project moves through the city’s land use review process, according to the Brooklyn Paper.
The development, known as Monitor Point, would transform an industrial site at 56 and 40 Quay St. into nearly 1,150 new apartments. The plan includes 288 affordable units under the city’s Mandatory Inclusionary Housing program. Developer Gotham Organization also plans to add public green space, waterfront access, and environmental remediation of the long-contaminated property.
Community members gathered at a recent Brooklyn Community Board 1 meeting to review the proposal, the newspaper reported. While some residents support the addition of affordable housing and improvements to the site, others expressed unease about the potential impact of two high-rise towers.
Concerns centered on overdevelopment, the potential for rising rents in nearby areas and increased pressure on existing infrastructure, the paper said.
The proposal could go through the Uniform Land Use Review Procedure, or ULURP, as early as this fall, the paper said.
