The New York State Community Commission on Reparations Remedies will hold two public meetings in July where residents can share their questions, thoughts, ideas and solutions.
The commission, established in 2024, is composed of scholars, community advocates and legal experts who are charged with examining the impacts of slavery, systemic discrimination and their ongoing effects on African Americans in New York State. The commissioners are exploring appropriate remedies, including reparations, to address these long-standing injustices.
There will be a virtual and an in-person meeting in Brooklyn. In the latter meeting, Brooklyn residents are invited to share their experiences and perspectives on gentrification and redlining in the borough.
