The Riegelmann Boardwalk in Coney Island will be restored, thanks to city investment that will repair the boardwalk and make it climate resilient.
The restoration project will upgrade all 2.7 miles of the boardwalk in several phases, New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced on Friday. In addition to upgrading the resiliency and accessibility of the boardwalk, the project will include improvements to public facilities, including restrooms, lifeguard stations and shade pavilions, he added.
NYC Parks will partner with the New York City Economic Development Corporation to implement the project and will conduct extensive public outreach during the design and construction stages, the mayor said.
“Coney Island is home to thousands of hard-working New Yorkers who work hard every day to leave behind something better for their families," Adams said in a statement. "Life here shouldn’t be a rollercoaster."
City Hall has now invested over $1 billion in Coney Island, which includes the creation of 1,500 new homes, new streets and improved infrastructure, and the renovation of the Abe Stark Sports Center.
