Brooklyn homeowners receiving the state’s Basic or Enhanced School Tax Relief (STAR or E-STAR) credit will soon see a $59.30 check in their mailbox. The payment is meant to cover the cost of an official NYC Bin, now required for residential trash collection.

Starting Nov. 12, 2024, all properties with one to nine residential units, including one- and two-family homes, must set out garbage in lidded bins of 55 gallons or less.

Those already using a similar container may continue doing so until June 2026, when the official NYC Bin becomes mandatory.

“Building a cleaner New York City is going to require all of us to work together to keep trash off our streets," Adams said in a statement. "To encourage everyone to do their part and to help put more money back into the pockets of working-class New Yorkers, we’ll be covering the cost of the NYC Bin for most one- and two-family homeowners."

Checks will be mailed automatically to eligible households, with no application needed.

  • Homeowners who already purchased a bin online or by phone will get a reimbursement check.

  • Those who buy one in the future will receive a check within 30 days of purchase.

  • Purchases made at Home Depot will require submitting proof of purchase online using a voucher code.

The program applies to property owners with household incomes under $500,000 who qualified for STAR or E-STAR in 2024 or 2025.
