Mayor Zohran Mamdani, New York City Department of Transportation commissioner Mike Flynn and Lyft announced a major Citi Bike expansion across New York City on Oct. 15.
The expansion adds more than 230 stations and 3,700 docks across seven neighborhoods that previously lacked access to the system, including Brownsville, East New York, Kensington and Bay Ridge in Brooklyn, according to a press release from the Office of the Mayor.
“Riding a bike is one of the best ways to get around the city, and expansions like this one help more New Yorkers get where they need to go,” Mamdani said.
Since the first stations of the expansion rollout, riders in Bay Ridge alone have taken more than 75,000 trips.
According to Flynn, more New Yorkers are riding Citi Bikes than ever before because of its convenience.
“We are pleased to have worked with Lyft to provide new commuting options for more neighborhoods in the outer boroughs,” Flynn said.
The expansion adds about 10 square miles of coverage, bringing total service coverage area to more than 86 square miles city-wide. Now, 62 percent of New Yorkers live within the Citi Bike service area.
“Citi Bike is an essential piece of the micromobility puzzle,” said Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso. “I look forward to seeing Citi Bike expand to even more communities across Brooklyn.”
City Council Member Alexa Avilés, representing Brooklyn’s district 38, described the project as “a matter of equity and economic justice,” and said she was glad Citi Bike continues to expand.
Additional expansion sites in the rollout include Norwood and Riverdale in the Bronx, as well as Forest Hills in Queens.
The government agency and company will continue to work together to deploy hundreds of new docks within existing service areas this fall, including in Brooklyn neighborhoods such as Williamsburg, Greenpoint and Gowanus.
